Advent Message

Advent

Our Superintendent shares his thoughts on Advent, in light of the Faith over Fear theme we have explored, both as a Circuit and Sheffield Methodist District:

Dear friends

As I reflected upon the recent Faith over Fear messages, I was humbled by conversations with those who are displaced and far from home, living in our communities where they should feel safe but all-too-often find that not to be the case.

During this Advent season, as we are once again invited into a time of waiting, watching, and hoping, maybe our reflections this year can be deepened by the voices of those who know waiting in a far more profound way. For those displaced by war, such as our Ukrainian families, or those seeking asylum from many parts of the world, who have been forced to flee conflict, persecution, or danger, maybe their voices need to be heard.

For them, Advent’s themes are not abstract. Many speak of a longing that echoes the season’s spiritual yearning: the longing for home, for family left behind, and for peace that feels painfully distant. Their homesickness reminds us that Advent begins with displacement – the Holy Family far from home, seeking shelter and safety. Their stories illuminate the Gospel in ways we cannot ignore.

Many who have fled war describe hope not as a simple feeling, but as a daily discipline. Waiting for news of loved ones, waiting for immigration decisions, waiting for an end to violence; this patient, courageous hope reflects the very heart of Advent. It challenges us to hold onto God’s promises even when the world feels uncertain.

Others speak of finding light in small, unexpected moments: a warm welcome from a local church, a shared meal, the kindness of strangers. These glimpses of grace remind us that God’s light often breaks into the world quietly, through ordinary acts of hospitality and compassion.

As we listen to the experiences of those who now share our communities, we are encouraged to rediscover Advent not simply as a countdown to Christmas, but as a call to embody Christ’s love. Their courage invites us to offer welcome, to pray for peace, and to stand alongside all who wait in hope.

May this Advent season open our hearts to one another, and to the transforming light of Christ that shines even in the darkest places.

God bless,

Rev Mark Carrick
